Trotters Ridge
Swim Team
Trotters Ridge Swim Team fielded its first team in 1991. Forty (40)
individuals signed up; twenty (20) finished the year. We finished
with a record of 0 - 6 (no surprise since we were swimming teams
with over eighty (80) swimmers). We had only one individual
qualifier for the county championship. Quality counted more than
quantity; he placed thirteenth (13) and the team finished fortieth
(40) out of forty-two teams (42).
In 1992, the parents organized early and incorporated as a Georgia
non-profit corporation (Trotters Ridge Swim Team, Inc.). The
parents stuffed flyers in mailboxes, placed announcements in the
local schools and made personal telephone contact with whoever
was interested. The team roster rose to eighty-six (86). We moved
up to thirty-second (32) in the county championship, but alas still
finished with a 0 - 6 record.
In 1993 we registered over one hundred (100) swimmers, of which
only forty (40) were repeats from the 1992 team. We lost our first
two meets that year, but then finished out the season undefeated
to go 4 - 2. We had our first individual winner at the county
championship (15 - 18 boys butterfly -- Steve Lewter) and finished
twenty-third (23) at the county meet.
In 1994 we won big. We had one hundred twenty-two (122)
swimmers registered (to make us the largest team in the summer
league). We went undefeated at 6 - 0!!! We placed seventh (7) in
the county championships and had our first relay to win first at the
county championship (9 - 10 boys medley relay -- Michael Miller,
Brett Zudekoff, Ryan Bridges and Brad Kuglin).
In 1995, we moved into the Super Division of the Gwinnett County
Swim League. We finished with a 3 - 3 record, losing only to the
three teams that finished first, second and third in the county
championship. We registered one hundred twenty-six (126)
swimmers and finished tenth (10) in the county championship.
In 1996, Trotters Ridge competed in the second highest division
and finished the year 5 - 1, losing only our first meet. We finished
the year with one hundred twenty-one (121) swimmers and again
finished tenth (10) in the county out of almost 50 teams.
In 1997, Trotters Ridge completed its most successful season ever,
going 6-0 in the second highest division, and finishing third (3rd)
out of 45 teams in the County Meet.
In 1998, by virtue of our 3rd place finish in the County the year
before, the team competed in the Super Division going a tough 0-6.
We swam very competitively in every meet but, due to having 86
swimmers registered, could not often match our opponents in terms
of size. We ended the year by finishing a very strong 7th at the
County meet - out of the 48 teams competing. Courtney Vechart set
a county record in the 9-10 girls 25 yard backstroke with a time of
16.55. This time stands as the current record in this age group for
backstroke.
We again swam in the Super Division in 1999. With about 95
swimmers registered, Trotters Ridge was very competitive but again
went winless during the regular season finishing 0-6. We finished a
strong 9th in the County Championships out of the 48 teams
competing. County champions from Trotters Ridge during the 1999
County Meet included Zachery Lopez who won the 8& under boys 25
yard freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke and was the high point
winner for his age group. The 11-12 girls medley relay team
consisting of Rachel Zudekoff, Amanda Murgas, Shalnee Bhaskar and
Courtney Vechart were crowned County Champs as well. And,
Michael Miller won the 13-14 boys 50 yard butterfly.
